I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada which is home to the Royal Canadian Air Force and, importantly for my Arctic research, the headquarters of the Canadian North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) Region. I am Associate Professor in IR in the Political Studies Department at the University of Manitoba and Director of the Centre for Defence and Security Studies (CDSS).
I completed my PhD in War Studies at the Royal Military College of Canada and it was during my studies there that I was first introduced to the study of the Arctic and especially its governance architecture over 10 years ago. I am fascinated by how the Arctic is conceived of so differently by different states and by various indigenous groups. Being Canadian, I have a particular interest in the Arctic Council. Increasingly, my research is focused on the impact of the geographic seams of the various US combatant commands as well as the areas of operations of NORAD and NATO on the Arctic and the idea of defence and competition in the Arctic.
I am the codirector of Canada’s North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network and Director of the Operations theme of the Canadian Defence and Security Network focused particularly on the Arctic.
