My name is Silke Reeploeg and I am an Associate Professor of History at Ilisimatusarfik/University of Greenland. I grew up in Southern Germany, but have lived most of my life in other parts of the world.
From 1991-1996, I studied for a BA (Hons) degree in English and Philosophy at the Manchester Metropolitan University in England, then worked and travelled my way around from the (North) Shetland Islands to southern Patagonia and back again. I returned to live in Shetland from 1999-2017, where I took a Masters degree with the University of the Highlands and Islands, as well as completing a PhD with the University of Aberdeen (2017). From 2009 I worked with the University of the Highlands and Islands as a researcher and lecturer, before coming to Karlstad University, Sweden to complete my post-doctoral project “Women in the Arctic, 1818-2018”. Little did I know then that what was meant to be a historical project on travel literature by women in and about the Arctic was going to take me there in more ways than one!
Here at the Department of Culture and Social History at Ilisimatusarfik/University of Greenland I teach introductory courses in World History and Historical Methodology, as well as Master-level courses on Gender, history, and critical approaches to cultural heritage. I supervise students on all levels, mainly on historical and cultural encounters in the Arctic, but I am also interested in supervising gender-related topics, interdisciplinary research on memory cultures or connections between art, history and literature.
My recent research has centred on entangled histories, memory and coloniality in the Arctic, but I also continue to be interested in coastal communities and feminist approaches, especially the politics of gender history, intersectionality and uses of the past in the North.
