Dr. Jamileh Javidpour is an Associate Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), where she leads research at the intersection of plankton ecology, ecosystem resilience, and blue biotechnology. Originally trained as biological oceanographer, she has developed an internationally recognized career exploring how gelatinous zooplankton shape marine food webs across coastal, oceanic, and polar ecosystems. Her research integrates ecological theory, molecular tools, observational oceanography, and innovation, often connecting science to industry through applied biotechnology and sustainable ocean solutions.
She has authored and coordinated major EU and national research projects, including Horizon Europe, Interreg, and national innovation funds, securing more than €14 million in competitive funding. Her work has led to several patents—ranging from jellyfish-based microplastic removal systems to novel cultivation technologies—and her applied research has been featured in major international media outlets such as The Guardian, BBC, Politico, Hakai Magazine, and Euronews.
A focal point of her current research is understanding shifting baselines in marine ecosystems and how long-term environmental change can drive species and community shifts. She is particularly interested in how these dynamics manifest in polar and subpolar regions, where rapid climate change makes the poles a natural laboratory for studying resilience, threshold responses, and ecological reorganization. These environments provide unique opportunities to investigate emerging phenomena such as changes in gelatinous zooplankton dominance, altered trophic pathways, and biodiversity redistribution across latitudinal gradients.
