Aarhus University – Research Funding database (Danish focus)

Academy of Finland (Finland) – The Academy of Finland has two major calls for applications each year: in spring and in autumn. We also offer a number of other calls throughout the year. The call deadlines are non-negotiable. Depending on the funding opportunity, the funding is applied for either by the principal investigator (PI) of the research project or by the research organisation.

Aleksanteri Institute – Visiting Fellows Programme (Highly Qualified Scholars) – The Aleksanteri Institute Visiting Fellows Programme provides an opportunity for highly qualified scholars in Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian studies to visit the Aleksanteri Institute and the University of Helsinki for a period of two months.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation – Humboldt Research Fellowship (excl. Germany / research stays in Germany) – The Humboldt Research Fellowship for researchers of all nationalities and research areas: We support you – postdoctoral and experienced researchers – with your research in Germany.

American Association of University Women – Since 1888, AAUW has been one of the largest funders of women’s graduate education, investing in women who go on to change the world.

Antarctic Science Foundation – The Antarctic Science Foundation brings together all people who believe in the value and potential of Antarctica to provide the answers we need to sustain our way of life on this planet. 

Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund – The Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund facilitates and promotes research on the Antarctic ecosystem. 

APECS – APECS has created an international and interdisciplinary database of funding resources.

Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS) – ACUNS administers the Canadian Northern Studies Trust (CNST) that supports students in various disciplines that engage in northern research. Donors to the CNST provide funds to students at college, and university undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral researchers to facilitate their northern research.

Bank of England – Research Visitor Programme – ​The Bank of England runs a Visitor Programme with a view to actively build and promote collaboration between Bank of England staff and top-calibre researchers.

Banting Research Foundation – The Banting Research Foundation provides awards to outstanding early-career health and biomedical researchers across Canada. 

Barry Amiel & Norman Melburn Trust – Political Research Fellowship (Research with a socialist orientation – UK focus) – The fellowship is intended to facilitate research with a socialist orientation, consistent with the broad aims of the Trust. The research fellowship is an initiative which is carried out in conjunction with a partner organisation. 

British Antarctic Survey – Antarctic science research funding and access to British Antarctic Survey infrastructure are available to both UK researchers and students. Investing in the next generation of Antarctic scientists is a vital part of achieving our science strategy and vision.

British Ecological Society (Internal Funding Options) – We support projects where there is a clear ecological science focus to the work; any other aspects, i.e. sociology, economics, etc., must be clearly integrated into the ecology and scientific goals of the project. The grants are to support work of the highest international standard and applicants need to show how the work will advance ecological science.

Canadian Cancer Society (Emerging Scholar Award) (Canada focus) – We are excited to launch the CCS Emerging Scholar Award program, aimed at establishing and advancing promising early career scientists and clinician scientists from across Canada.

Canada Council for the Arts (Canada focus) – The Research and Creation component of Explore and Create supports the initial stages of the creative process. Canadian artists, artistic groups and arts organizations can apply to develop and make creative works. Grants provide support for creative research, creation and project development.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) International Scholarships Program – Canadian Bureau for International Education – The Global Affairs Canada (GAC) International Scholarships Program consists of Short-term Exchange Programs for Canadians and international students. Under these programs, international students and faculty can receive a scholarship to do an exchange in Canada and Canadian students and faculty can receive a scholarship to do an exchange abroad.

Carlsberg Foundation (Kingdom of Denmark) – The Carlsberg Foundation supports visionary and innovative international basic research within the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. Basic research that makes us smarter, helps us to address global challenges and benefits society. The Carlsberg Foundation is particularly keen to support talent development and generational change in Danish basic research, internationalisation of the Danish talent pool and visionary research innovation.

Centre for Arctic and Global Health – This is a list of calls potentially relevant for researches and health workers with projects related to global health. 

Chevening Fellowships (Mid-Career) (UK focus) – Chevening Fellowships are offered to mid-career professionals who have reached a position of influence and want to increase their knowledge, networks, and potential through tailored short courses, research, or professional placements at UK institutions.

Churchill Northern Studies Centre – Northern Research Fund – The Northern Research Fund (NRF) provides grants to researchers from all disciplines who use the facilities and services of the CNSC.

CMHC Housing Research Scholarship Program – The CMHC Housing Research Scholarship Program works to build Canadian expertise in housing research and promotes excellence in research through training.

Danish Industry Foundation – The Danish Industry Foundation develops and supports innovative, inspirational and economically sustainable projects and initiatives that strengthen the competitiveness of the Danish industry.

DAAD Canada (Short-term research grants) – Short-Term Research Grants are awarded for 1-6 months to highly qualified candidates who have completed a Master’s degree or Diploma, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree at the latest by the time they begin their grant supported research, or those who have already completed a PhD (postdocs).

Dobbin Atlantic Scholarship Programme (Atlantic Canada-Ireland) – The Flaherty Program has been initiated to support to the continued development of academic links between Canada and Ireland. Applications are welcome from applicants of all ages, from all academic disciplines, whose work has the potential to further the objectives of this program.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) (UK focus) – ESRC is the UK’s largest funder of economic, social, behavioral and human data science.

Fondation Trudeau/Trudeau Foundation – The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation focuses on the leadership development of our Scholars.

Frost Centre Postdoctoral Fellowship – Bondar Fellowship Trent’s Roberta Bondar Fellowship in Northern and Polar Studies – The position is for a 12 month term (with an option of a one time 12 month renewal) at a salary of $60,000, plus a research allowance. This position is aimed at recently graduated Ph.D.’s (within 5 years of graduation) with research interests in any area of Northern and Polar studies, focusing on, but not strictly limited to, Canada’s North.

Fulbright Scholar Program – The Fulbright Program, the United States government’s flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange, offers passionate and accomplished students and scholars in more than 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to mutual understanding. Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) (Denmark focus) – Independent Research Fund Denmark funds specific research activities within all scientific areas that are based on the researchers’ own initiatives and that improve the quality and internationalisation of Danish research.

Inspiring Girls Expedition – Inspiring Girls Expeditions empowers young women to lead and succeed through science, art, and outdoor exploration.

International Arctic Science Committee – IASC Fellowship Program (Early Career) – The IASC Fellowship Program was established in 2014 and is meant to engage early career researchers in the work of the IASC Working Groups (WGs): Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Marine, Social & Human, and Terrestrial.

International Job Databases – This is a new site with job advertisements for academic and private positions in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation – The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation offers fellowships to exceptional individuals in pursuit of scholarship in any field of knowledge and creation in any art form, under the freest possible conditions.

John Templeton Foundation – We fund work on subjects ranging from black holes and evolution to creativity, forgiveness, and free will. We also encourage civil, informed dialogue among scientists, philosophers, theologians, and the public at large.

Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust – The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust is a Quaker trust which supports people who address the root causes of conflict and injustice.

Kavli Trust – Kavli Trust is the foundation that owns the entire Kavli Group, and which distributes the entire profit to good causes. The majority of the funds, 70 percent, are allocated to projects in the four countries where Kavli has food production: Norway, Sweden, Finland and the UK. The rest goes to international aid projects in countries where poverty, economic inequality and other humanitarian challenges are widespread.

Laura Bassi Scholarship (Funding for editing – Masters/PhD/Junior Scholars 5 years or less) – The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded three times per year: December, April, and August. 

Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program (Japan-Canada) – The Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program, offered in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), provides opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in Canada to pursue collaborative research in Japan. This program allows graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in Canada to advance their own research while promoting scientific progress in both Japan and Canada.

Natural Environment Research Council (UK focused) – Information on UKRI research funding opportunities.

National Science Foundation (Arctic Research) – The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites investigators at U.S. organizations to submit proposals to the Arctic Sciences Section in the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) within the Geosciences Directorate, to conduct research about the Arctic region.

National Science Foundation (Antarctic Research) – The National Science Foundation funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering.

Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) – The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada funds visionaries, explorers and innovators who are searching for the scientific and technical breakthroughs that will benefit our country. We are Canada’s largest supporter of discovery and innovation. We work with universities, colleges, businesses and not-for-profits to remove barriers, develop opportunities and attract new expertise to make Canada’s research community thrive. We give Canadian scientists and engineers the means to go further because we believe in research without borders and beyond frontiers.

NordForsk (Nordic focus) – NordForsk funds and facilitates Nordic research cooperation.

Northern Participant Funding Program (Canada only) – Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada – Funding for Indigenous peoples and other Northerners to participate meaningfully in impact assessments of major projects in Yukon, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Eeyou and Nunavik Marine Regions.

Scottish Society for Northern Studies (Early Career) – In accordance with its aims and objectives, the Society offers a variety of bursaries to eligible students and scholars at any stage in their career, regardless of country of residence or institutional affiliation. Opportunities include grants for fieldwork, publication, as well as funding for conference organisation and attendance.

Shackleton Scholarship Fund – There are two types of scholarship available for funding: (Academic) For graduates to visit the South Atlantic for research into the natural or social sciences, in such diverse subjects as place names, the English language spoken in the Falkland Islands, Falklands society, fresh water fish, willows, grasses, geology, tree-growing, and many other topics. Several scholars have produced research papers and compiled information for books; and (Quality of Life) For people whose visits to the Falkland Islands, or from the Falkland Islands to other parts of the world, benefit the region and enhance the quality of life for the Islanders. These have included top class sports coaches in swimming, golf, fly fishing, shooting and horsemanship; musicians and artists. Several scholarships have been awarded to Falkland Islanders. The Fund benefits both the scholars and the Falkland Islands by creating wider knowledge and promoting new skills and activities.

Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) (Canada) – The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports research and research training in the humanities and social sciences.

Soroptomist Foundation of Canada – The Soroptimist Foundation of Canada annually offers several $8,500 grants to female graduate students in Canada to assist them with university studies which will qualify them for careers which will improve the quality of women’s lives.

Southern Environmental Law Center – Reed Environmental Writing Award – The Phillip D. Reed Environmental Writing Award celebrates writers who achieve both literary excellence and offer extraordinary insight into the South’s natural treasures and environmental challenges.

Spencer Foundation – Small Research Grants Program – The Small Research Grants Program supports education research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived, with budgets up to $50,000 for projects ranging from one to five years. We accept applications three times per year.

Students on Ice Foundation – Through educational expeditions, cross-cultural experiences, science and outreach initiatives in the Arctic, Antarctic, and places in between, Students on Ice inspires new perspectives, ideas, connections and collaborative solutions for a nature-positive world. 

Swedish Research Council (Sweden) – The Swedish Research Council is Sweden’s largest governmental research funding body, and supports research of the highest quality within all scientific fields.

Rosetrees Trust (Various grants for medical research – UK institutions) – Rosetrees is a private charity, supporting medical research and we take a great personal interest in the researchers we support. We meet with all our researchers, understand their work and develop long term relationships.

Royal Canadian Geographical Society – Range of funding for students and scholars (Canadian focused scholarship)

Royal Geographical Society – RGS-IBG Small Research Grants (Society Members Only & UK affiliation) – Each year several grants of up to £3,000 are given to early career researchers (up to 10 years post PhD). One grant of up to £3,000 will be awarded from the 20th International Geographical Congress Fund.

Russell Sage Foundation – Dissertation Research Grants Program – The dissertation research grants program supports innovative and high-quality dissertation research projects that address questions relevant to RSF’s priority areas: Behavioral Science and Decision Making in Context; Future of Work; Race, Ethnicity and Immigration; Immigration and Immigrant Integration; and Social, Political, and Economic Inequality (US focus).

The Company of Biologists – Travelling Fellowships (Graduate students and post-doctoral researchers) – Travelling Fellowships of up to £3,000 to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers wishing to make collaborative visits to other laboratories. These are designed to offset the cost of travel/accommodation and other related expenses. There is no restriction on nationality.

The Churchill Fellowship (UK citizens) – The Churchill Fellowship is a national network of 3,800 dynamic individuals who are inspiring change in every part of UK life.

The First Sea Lord Fellows – Experienced Royal Navy personnel and civil servants are selected for a two-year programme where they help shape the Royal Navy’s conceptual fighting power through academic research and strategic thinking on core topics and their own research interests. To help them provide strategic leadership and direction, the Fellows receive training on topics such as leadership, business, media and academic skills in the first half of the programme.

The Getty Foundation (Individual and Team Research Grants – Art History and Visual Arts) – Getty Foundation grants are for individual scholars and research teams to strengthen the field of art history by supporting international and interdisciplinary research projects in the following areas.

The Huntington (In-Residence – Long/Short-term Fellowships & Travel Grants) – The Huntington offers fourteen Long-Term Fellowships for nine to twelve months in residence, each with a stipend of $50,000. Also there are approximately 140 Short-Term Fellowships are available for one to five months in residence and carry monthly stipends of $3,500. They are open to scholars in any field where The Huntington’s collections are strong. The Travel Grants for Study Abroad are available in any of the fields in which The Huntington’s own collections are strong and where the research will be carried out in libraries or archives outside of the United States or Canada, especially those in the UK, continental Europe, or Latin America. Lastly, the Exchange Fellowships are with Corpus Christi, Jesus, Linacre, Lincoln, and New Colleges, Oxford; Trinity Hall, Cambridge; Trinity College Dublin/Marsh’s Library; the University of Durham; and the John Rylands Research Institute and Library at The University of Manchester (funding available starting Aug. 22). The intention is to encourage projects which can be developed both in The Huntington’s collections and in archives across the world.

The Leverhulme Trust (UK focus) – The Trust seeks to provide mechanisms for the support of researchers and students which can be effective at all stages in their careers.

The Pew Charitable Trusts (US focus) – PEW focuses on making it easier for people with opioid use disorder to receive treatment, improving suicide risk assessment and care, preserving and innovating antibiotics, protecting people from unsafe health products, and increasing the use of data in public health to prevent illnesses and improve Americans’ well-being equitably.

The Research Council of Norway – Research organisations, companies and entities in the public sector can apply for funding from the Research Council of Norway. Private individuals cannot apply.

The Royal Society – Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowship – The Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellowships provide an opportunity for talented international research leaders to undertake a flexible 12 month period of sabbatical leave in a UK university or research institution, to foster international collaborative links and enriching scientific research in the host organisation as well as the wider UK science base.

The Royal Society – Research Grants (Early career or returning after break) – A scheme for scientists in the UK who are at an early stage in their career or returning from a career break and want to purchase specialised equipment and consumables.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh – RSW Small Research Grants (Scottish based PIs) – RSE Small Research Grants are designed to support personally conducted high-quality research. The awards are available to cover eligible costs arising from a defined research project. They are designed to encourage high-quality research and academic innovation and, where possible, to integrate with the overall programme of awards such that successful applications may lead to future bids for RSE Research Workshops or RSE Research Networks funding, or act as preliminary investigations for other larger research awards.

The Trebek Initiative – We fund photographers, documentarians, educators, conservationists, innovators and researchers whose projects aim to preserve Canadian and Indigenous land, wildlife, water, culture and history.

The Velux Foundations (Denmark / International) – RSE Small Research Grants are designed to support personally conducted high-quality research. The awards are available to cover eligible costs arising from a defined research project. They are designed to encourage high-quality research and academic innovation and, where possible, to integrate with the overall programme of awards such that successful applications may lead to future bids for RSE Research Workshops or RSE Research Networks funding, or act as preliminary investigations for other larger research awards.

Villum Foundation – Villum Young Investigator – Foundation supports internationalisation, and with the Villum Young Investigator Programme encourages Danish universities to support and recruit Danish as well as international researcher talents.

Wellcome Trust – We support discovery research into life, health and wellbeing, and we’re taking on three worldwide health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

Weston Family Awards in Northern Research – Weston Family Award winners undertake research projects across a broad spectrum of fields and disciplines in the natural sciences, including studies of northern ecosystems, biodiversity, flora and fauna, meteorology, oceanography, glaciology, geography and environmental studies.

Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (UK) – Churchill Fellows are dedicated and dynamic individuals with a vision for change in their community or sector. We support their mission by funding them to explore innovations around the world and then helping them to put their ideas into practice in the UK.
