I was born and raised in rural Newfoundland, Canada and completed my undergraduate studies in Political Science and Business at Memorial University of Newfoundland. I completed my graduate studies in Political Science at Memorial and then my PhD at the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University in Wales, UK.
I am based at the Center for War Studies (CWS) University of Southern Denmark (SDU). I started there as a Carlsberg Foundation Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow. Then I was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow. Presently, I am an External Lecturer and a Research Fellow at SDU while holding a JR Smallwood Foundation Fellowship.
For over a decade I have focused my studies and research on exploring different dimensions of international relations, with an empirical focus on the Arctic region. For my research I have travelled extensively in many states, including the eight Arctic states, speaking with diplomats, civil servants, NGO representatives, Indigenous Peoples representatives and community leaders, as well as other researchers.
I have also had the opportunity to do archival research at the Library and Archives Canada. These experiences and opportunities to meet and talk with some of the most interesting people cooperating, campaigning, living, and representing their people in the Arctic region have enriched my research and helped broaden my appreciation of just how dynamic and important the Arctic and the study of the region is in the 21st century.
